Title: From Text to Packet Headers: Ed's Contributions to Computer Security
Author(s): David Marchette*
Companies: Naval Surface Warfare Center
Keywords: probability density estimation ; visualization ; computer security ; intrusion detection ; text analytics
Abstract:

This talk will be an idiosyncratic tour through some of my collaborations with Ed Wegman, and the work that he has inspired. The tour will take us from early work in nonparametric probability density estimation, through text analysis for the "automated DARPA program manager" project (which we dubbed "Automated Serendipity"), and on to computer security, intrusion detection, and the analysis of streams of Internet packets. This will only touch on some of Ed's work, and the work that he has inspired through his extensive publications and talks, his collaborations and his students, but it is hoped that it will provide some insight into Ed's contributions in numerous areas of importance to national security.
