Abstract:

The Advanced Placement Statistics curriculum puts an emphasis on the conditions necessary for statistical inference and requires students to check conditions before proceeding with a test of hypothesis or constructing a confidence interval. Many introductory level statistics texts include conditions and how to check to see if they are satisfied. But what are the consequences if conditions are not satisfied or not enough information is given to check them? Why should students "proceed with caution" when conditions are not satisfied? This paper looks at the consequences when conditions are not satisfied. Several activities, involving one and two sample procedures, are presented. These activities can be used by Advanced Placement or introductory level statistics students to explore the consequences of proceeding with statistical inference when conditions are not satisfied.
