Abstract:

In an introductory statistics course, hands-on student learning is essential for maximum success. Experience in recent years has shown that introducing real-world data into the classroom is also an effective teaching tool. This paper will discuss the implementation and results of an approach to combine these two tools to teach the basic concepts of introductory statistics through use of real data collected by students. Students will collect data by use of random sampling techniques and sound survey methods. These data will then be used in assignments throughout the semester to reinforce concepts such as correlation, regression, and chi-square tests.
