Abstract:

As part of an NSF-funded project, we developed new course materials for the introductory statistics course designed to engage students in discovery. The materials are designed to actively involve students in the design and implementation of data collection and the analysis and interpretation of the resulting data. Our goal in developing the course materials is to have students adopt a statistician's point-of-view and begin to think like statisticians. These activities have been incorporated into a small section of an introductory statistics course for three semesters. This section is an honors section that attracts students with high mathematics ability from different majors across campus. Groups of high mathematics ability students who enrolled in regular sections of the introductory course are used as a comparison group. Preliminary results on students' performance on test items and projects will be presented. Additionally, students' attitudes toward the new materials and statistics in general will be presented.
