Title: Item Reduction in Screening Scales: A Nonparametric Approach

Abstract:

A nonparametric approach based on an area under the empirical receiving operation characteristic curve was proposed to select items in a scale, as a sum of item response indicators, for a screening test. Least useful items were removed subsequently from the scale. Then, a forward selection procedure was applied to the remaining items to find a subset of items for a reduced scale, at least as useful as the full scale for screening. Bootstrapping samples from the original dataset were used to evaluate spectrum of item selection. The method was illustrated with an example using a dataset of the patients with and without high risk of Alzheimer's disease who were administered a 40-item test for olfactory function.
