Title: The Statistical Ecology of Google Whacking

Abstract:

Google whacking is a 21st-century parlor game that uses the Google search engine. The objective is to find two words that appear on the same web page exactly once in the 8.1 billion web pages that Google indexes. We present a negative binomial regression model that predicts the occurrence of singleton events, (i.e., Google whacks). This model is related to both size bias sampling and species coverage in statistical ecology. The use of statistical methods to understand the web is increasing rapidly. The Google whacking game provides students with an interesting and easily understood example of statistical modeling in this environment.
