Title: Advanced Statistical Methods for Assessment of Probability of Detection

Abstract:

Nondestructive evaluation methods are used widely in industry to assure the integrity of critical system components. Examples include rotating components of jet engines and heat-transfer tubes in nuclear power plants. There is an important need to quantify the probability of detection (POD) in both production quality control and inservice reliability for expensive parts that degrade over time. Standard assessment methods, known as ahat vs. a, use a linear regression relating NDE signal response to flaw or defect size. This paper extends this standard one-dimensional POD estimation method to a bivariate response model that also allows for truncation and censoring of two-variable responses used in modern NDE inspection systems. We also describe methods for dealing with inspection situations that have more than one source of error that can cause flaws or defects to be missed in actual applications.
