Title: Multivariate Analysis of a Computer Experiment for Data Center Thermal Distribution

Abstract:

The temperature management is a key in designing and running a reliable data center with many storage servers operating constantly and generating heat. How different configurations and specifications can affect the data center thermal distribution is largely unknown. This is because the physical thermal process is complex, depending on many factors, and detailed temperature measurements are not monitored in the actual data centers. It is possible to build a physics-based algorithm for simulating an air/temperature movement mechanism under a given set of conditions (i.e., to conduct an informative computer experiment). A run in such an experiment may take several days and require the stabilization of the algorithm with a large number of reference points. Hence, the use of an efficient and informative experimental design is necessary. We present a latent variable modeling approach for analyzing the multivariate temperature readings produced by the computer experiment. Also discussed is a method for obtaining practical choices of certain factor levels for a given set of physical and usage requirements.
