Abstract - #303284
Title: A Comparison of Income Concepts Across Agencies: IRS, Census, and BLS
Author(s): Eric Henry*+ and Charles Day
Companies: U.S. Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Internal Revenue Service
Address: Statistics of Income Division, Washington, DC, 20013, United States
Keywords: Income ; Current Population Survey ; Consumer Expenditure Survey ; Statistics of Income
Abstract:

The Internal Revenue Service, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the U.S. Census Bureau all collect data on personal and household income. As their purposes for collecting these data vary, so do the definitions they use. The authors propose to study the differences and similarities in the income definitions used in the IRS Statistics of Income program, the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Expenditure Survey and present them in a form useful to economists trying to use these different data series.
