Abstract:

Introductory Statistics has been the general education Mathematics requirement for students at ETSU for several years. In 2002, a computer lab was implemented to teach the course. Each section meets twice a week, once in the lab and once in a regular classroom. We use an '"ctive-learning/computer-enhanced" approach. When lecturing in the classroom, worksheets are used to ensure student participation, encouraging group work but with personal accountability. When lecturing in the lab, accessible class notes include a presentation of the topic, links to applets and information on the WWW, and short questions or activities. Labs are prepared to explore or apply the material learned. Computers are seen as time-savers instead of time-takers. A resource page is maintained in order to increase agreement among instructors. A resource center for instructors, workshops, and a regional conference were organized. Training in the teaching of Intro Stats is offered to math graduate students. Email is used to share with instructors newly produced materials and information. Examples of the material used will be presented.
