Abstract:

Even good statisticians can find themselves feeling like fish out of water when they first consult and collaborate in the public policy arena. The problems are frequently complex and not yet clearly formulated. Often, there are multiple stakeholders with different values, goals, and perceptions of the issues. I'll present some lessons learned from working on problems in this interdisciplinary environment. I'll also discuss key skills that often need further development when a new statistician enters this world.
