Abstract:

Hennepin County Library is a leader among national public libraries in the development of web pages for youth. Their first youth web site, KidLinks, was launched in 1998, followed by TeenLinks in 1999. In 2001, staffing was dedicated to these web sites, allowing indepth development. New iterations of KidLinks and TeenLinks provide new features, interactivity, and flexibility. Public libraries have always provided services to school-aged children. A vision of the library's web site is to be an engaging place of community for lifelong learning. The target audience for youth is 6 to 18 year olds served by two distinct, age appropriate web sites. This has been crucial to the success of KidLinks and TeenLinks, guiding choices for content, graphics, new services, promotion to students and teachers, maintenance, and evaluation. This is the "model" on which the paper will be based.
