Title: Evolution of the EIA Energy Kid's Page

Abstract:

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) added the EIA Kid's Page to the EIA Web site in 1998 to provide basic energy knowledge for students and teachers. The designers were not web experts and educators. The Page combined content for many grade levels, had non-intuitive link names, and had pages that were cluttered and difficult to navigate. Despite these content and navigation issues, the EIA Kid's Page became the EIA site's second-most accessed page in 2003, reaching 150,000 unique users a month in mid-2004. This made improving the Page necessary. In Spring 2003, working with the National Energy Education Development (NEED), a nonprofit education organization, EIA conducted usability testing with students and teachers to identify problem areas and found a number of areas for improvement. In 2004, EIA and NEED redesigned Kid's Page and EIA conducted usability testing on it. The testing showed that the new Page was easier to navigate and the content was clearer and better understood. This talk discusses the results of the two rounds of usability testing and implementation of recommendations from those tests.
