Title: Japanese Lesson Study: An Application to Upper-level Undergraduate Statistics

Abstract:

A group of four undergraduate statistics educators convened at St. Olaf College in Spring 2004 and embarked on a pilot implementation---a preliminary attempt to assess the feasibility of Japanese lesson study in upper-level undergraduate statistics courses. Following the lesson study process, we created a lesson plan for a week-long unit on goodness-of-fit tests in a Mathematical Statistics course. Despite our difficulties and inexperience, all involved found the lesson study process valuable, especially with proper preparation, active participation, and realistic expectations. We believe we developed a lesson collaboratively that was higher in quality and ambition than anything we would have tried ourselves. More importantly, we gained valuable insight into effective statistical pedagogy and how students develop statistical thinking. For this process to be effective, it is essential that instructors feel comfortable devoting sufficient time to the process, sharing their ideas, spending class time on open student investigations, observing and reflecting on each others' teaching, and embracing classroom research opportunities.
