Abstract:

This project applies the action research model to evaluate the success of making a change in the instructional materials and the instructional strategies in two different types of post-calculus probability and statistics courses at two different universities. The instructional materials focus on active and cooperative learning, visualization of concepts, and use of simulation. This paper presents the preliminary results associated with applying the four phases of the action research model which are to determine 1) What is the learning problem? 2) What technique can be used to address the learning problem? 3) What type of evidence can be gathered to show whether the implementation is effective? 4) What should be done next based on what was learned? Resources will be shared for the application of the action research model to the teacher experimentation cycle.
