Abstract:

Pairs of teams play matches in an extended tournament. The team size and number of available players are both fixed. The teams form an incomplete block design for players. The matches nest teams. Tournaments are described in which both the team and match designs are balanced. These tournaments are fair: the number of times players play together on a team is constant for all player pairs; the number of times they play against each other is a different constant. Methods for constructing such designs are described. These tournaments extend the catalogue in Preece, D. A. (1967). Some ways to model individual player strengths using just Win/Lose/Draw match results are considered.
