Abstract:

In order to reduce the length of tennis matches, amateur tennis organizations often adopt variations on the scoring rules. One variation involves playing a single set with the first to win eight games rather than best of three sets, each to six games. Another variation is "no ad" scoring, where once the game score reaches deuce, the next point determines the winner of the game. We study several of these scoring variations by considering the two objectives: (1) shorten the expected length of the match, and (2) ensure that the stronger player does indeed have the greatest chance of winning.
