Abstract:

For most of baseball history, statisticians have been relative outsiders. They've recorded and sometimes analyzed the statistics, but the men who run the franchises generally have paid attention only grudgingly, if at all. But the times they are a-changing, with a number of teams employing either outside consultants or full-time staffers with more than a passing familiarity with statistical analysis. This process has just begun, and is only going to accelerate in coming years. In his talk, ESPN.com baseball columnist Rob Neyer will review the history of statisticians in the employ of baseball teams, and discuss what the future may hold.
