Title: A Statistical Study of the Effectiveness of Greek Schools
Author(s): John Panaretos*+
Companies: Athens University of Economics and Business
Address: Dept. of Statistics, 104 34 Athens, , , Greece
Keywords: educational statistics ; multilevel models
Abstract:

The Greek educational system has undergone many changes in the last 50 years. A lot of discussion has taken place during these years regarding the effectiveness of these changes and their social and political implications. Rarely however, the arguments and views put forward were supported by data and their statistical analysis. We use multilevel models to make an attempt to find our how effective Greek schools are by exploring the factors that affect students' performance in the national entrance exams (the only way by which students can enter higher education institutions in Greece). A three-level model is considered, assigning students at level 1, schools at level 2, and prefectures at level 3.
