Abstract:

In Italy, in recent years, there has been a notable increase in the need to build appropriate indicators, as well as to implement appropriate models, for the performance assessment of the university educational system. It is well known that many stakeholders such as policy makers, teachers, researchers, technical and administrative staff, and students are interested in measuring the performance of this process, in particular the ranking and selection of the best university to apply to. As regards the efficiency evaluation, the university service can be modeled as a production process where inputs such as capital, labor, and organizational factors are used to produce teaching and research outputs and outcomes. In this paper the analysis of efficiency of the Italian universities is carried out with the particular purpose to detect units (or groups of units) with low or high efficiency. A new clustering approach is proposed for the analysis, using datasets pertaining to recent surveys on the performance of the Italian universities.
