Abstract:

Over the summer of 2002, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a nationwide random digit dialing telephone survey to determine bicycling and walking trends among the driving age (16 years or older) U.S. population. In response to concerns that bicycling and walking trends among those living in the 5-6 percent of nontelephone (non land line) households might be different, BTS also conducted a supplemental survey examining bicycling and walking trends among those in nontelephone households. These estimates were collected with the goal of supplementing the data collected from the households with telephones to generate more reliable statistics. This paper documents the process of identifying non-telephone households, drawing the sample, conducting the study and illustrating some of the difficulties related to surveying this population, especially through mail. Some initial findings from the survey will also be presented.
