Title: An Example of the Use of the System for Estimation of Variance due to Nonresponse and Imputation

Abstract:

For most survey samples, if not all, we have to deal with the problem of missing values. The presence of missing values (nonresponse) generally leads to bias and uncertainty in the estimates. However, it is possible to estimate the variance due to nonresponse by assuming that the bias is negligible. In the last decade, many methods were proposed to estimate this variance, and some of these have been implemented in the System for Estimation of Variance due to Nonresponse and Imputation (SEVANI). I will define the problem, describe the methodology that SEVANI is based on, and discuss potential uses of the system. Some examples of how SEVANI could be used are: to help in measuring the quality of estimates, to compare nonresponse treatment strategies, to help allocate resources in a more efficient manner and so that inference is valid in the presence of nonresponse. Lastly, the presentation will focus on an example showing the system in action. This example will show why it is important to calculate the variance due to nonresponse and the consequences of not taking it into consideration.
