Abstract:

Software metrics have long held promise as the operational measures for the IT industry. The reasons for embarking on the collection of software metrics are the desire to improve business decisions, processes, quality, and to prediction accuracy. However, the promise of metrics has not been met due to lack of appropriate procedures and general immaturity of the IT industry. The paper distinguishes between analysis and reporting, and the impact this distinction has on the organizational support and training in IT necessary to fully utilize metrics. Successful use of a new procedure, termed extreme analysis, based on modern programming practice is described. Examples are given of the use of extreme analysis to bridge the gap between statistician and the IT business stakeholders.
