Description
One can argue that the best ambassador for the statistics profession is a well-trained and enthusiastic teacher of statistics. More and more students at all levels are being exposed to statistical ideas and methods. Curricular changes in K-12 mathematics have strengthened the probability and statistics strand. The number of students taking the Advanced Placement Staitstics Exam has exploded since the first offering in 1997. More and more students are taking introductory level statistics courses in community colleges, four-year colleges and universitites. Employers are becoming more aware of the value of college graduates with an undergraduate degree in statistics. Unfortunately, many of the teachers presenting statistical material do not have the necessary experience or training in statistics. This session will discuss four initiatives coordinated by the Advisory Committee on Teacher Enhancement and supported by the American Statistical Association to provide opportunities for the enhancement of teachers of statistics at all levels.
