Description

Online journals are now commonplace. However, it is often challenging to locate the data and methodology behind sophisticated analyses. While many journals have adopted various forms of "Supplemental Data", the present implementations are far from satisfactory. In particular, we need approaches to address (a) the rapid growth of data in many fields; (b) the increasing demands from federal agencies to make data and analysis details public; and (c) the long-term accessibility of these information for future research investigations decades or centuries hence. We also need to recognize that "data" encompasses much more than a flat file of numbers--it requires metadata on design, provenance, and algorithms for analysis and visual interpretation.
