Title: Teaching Health Care Workers to Reason with Numbers: A Few Ideas

Abstract:

As statisticians and as a professional society, one challenge we face is helping people learn to reason with numbers. Health care is certainly an area where addressing this challenge is critical to our well-being. We might teach traditional topics in biostatistics and epidemiology to physicians and researchers. However, there is also a great need to help all health care workers understand basic principles of reasoning with numbers.

This paper and presentation will include ideas on how everyday examples within health care (and perhaps some familiar examples outside of health care) can be used to elicit discussion on important statistical topics. The target audiences of such teaching could include caretakers, clinicians, laboratory workers, and office workers. If time permits, an interactive example will be included as part of the presentation.
