Title: The Use of Java Applets for Internet-Based Statistical Computing

Construction of applets using the Java language permits the addition of statistical computation capabilities to any HTML document. Consequently, Web sites can be created which provide significant alternatives to conventional data analysis software or textbooks. By requiring only a browser for access, this approach eliminates the need to distribute software to end users and greatly facilitates the upgrade process. In addition, applets imbedded into a document add a dynamic element which is missing in static text. This paper explores the pros and cons of Internet-based statistical computing using Java, drawing from several on-going development projects.
