Abstract:

In recent years, the spectrum of mobile and handheld computers suitable for survey data collection has expanded rapidly. Several different form factors are now available and each has it own relative strengths and weaknesses. In selecting such a device for a field data collection effort, several important tradeoffs must be evaluated. These include processing and storage capability, form factor and ergonomics, viewability, availability of software development tools, maintainability, and cost. This presentation will examine the wide range of mobile computers that currently comprise the state of the art. Results of testing, prototyping and user focus groups will be presented in the context of a large ongoing data collection effort for the NSDUH (National Survey on Drug Use and Health). Several different mobile computing devices will be available for a hands-on "show and tell" session.
