Abstract:

A sample of 560 smokers enrolled in a smoking cessation trial (91% White, 53% male, ave. age = 44 years, ave. cigarettes/day=24) provided baseline measurements on DSM-IV criteria for nicotine dependence using the SCID-NP. Empirical Bayes implementation of IRT modeling techniques will be employed to evaluate the measurement properties of this set of diagnostic criteria and examine its relationship to the Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire. In particular, we will show how cutpoints for can be established, provide optimal weights for item and consider whether the scale should be modified by either adding or dropping individual items.
