Abstract:
|
The consulting statistician who also teaches is an advantageous position to use the consulting experiences to enhance the teaching of statistics courses. A statistical consulting problem in medicine usually presents an opportunity to teach the clinician specific statistical methods and to use the problem as an example of an application of such methods that are taught in applied statistics courses. A common problem in medical research is the selection of an appropriate statistical model to predict an important clinical outcome. The design and analysis for the particular problem of predicting hemodialysis graft thrombosis among patients with end-stage renal disease is presented to demonstrate that the consulting process can be a learning experience for both the clinician and the statistician and can be used to advantage to enhance biostatistics teaching.
