The statistical group at Ernst & Young LLP provides statistical assistance and advice on hundreds of projects in a given year. The group is located in Washington DC but works with clients (both internally and externally) all over the United States as well as internationally. As a result, most of the statistical consulting is remote from the clients, relying primarily on phone or email. This allows the team to juggle multiple projects and saves time and money for the clients but there are pitfalls. In the consulting world, it is crucial to ensure that distance or miscommunications do not become the differentiator between you and a competitor. Communication gaps can mean the difference between an unhappy client and a satisfied repeat client. Common issues that arise and strategies to minimize misunderstandings and rework will be discussed.
