Abstract:

In several parts of the United States, pipeline infrastructure used to deliver natural gas is degraded and prone to leakage. Because the natural gas leaking from these pipelines contains large amounts of the greenhouse gas methane, it is important to identify the locations of natural gas leaks and quantify their magnitude. In this work, we analyze spatiotemporal data of methane concentrations collected by Google Street View vehicles. We develop methods for locating possible leaks, quantifying their size, and estimating the number of leaks within a city.
