Title: Childhood Obesity Modeling with a Semi-Markov Process

Abstract:

This paper demonstrates a multi-state model for childhood obesity data. The model tracks a subject as they transition between categorical states based on their body-mass index. Current subject data is compared with a historical state model to determine if and how childhood obesity rates are changing over time. This comparison is conducted with a goodness of fit test based on the multi-state model's covariance structure. This test requires expectations generated by Laplace transformations and a simulated model covariance matrix. Simulation demonstrates that the test can differentiate between similar hypothesized obesity models.
