Abstract #318659
Title: Statistical Issues in Climate Science
Author(s): Michael Stein*

Keywords: Climate change ; Space-time processes ; Extremes
Abstract:

Climate science presents a number of severe challenges to statisticians, including complex spatial-temporal dependencies, nonstationarity in space and/or time, enormous data sets, the need to combine disparate sources of information (e.g., monitoring data, data products, and climate model output), and a strong interest in extreme outcomes. To further complicate matters, it is difficult to separate climate science research from the public policy and political aspects of how humanity should respond to climate change. We will discuss the role of statistics and statisticians in all aspects of climate science, from the technical to the political and anything in between that interests the participants.
