Abstract:

The objective of the project is to foster progress toward Healthy People 2020 and Million Hearts. Hypertensive individuals with and without hypercholesterolemia will be identified from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 1988-1994, 1999-2004, and 2005-2010. Hypertension is defined by blood pressure (BP) =140/=90 mmHg, treatment, and twice-told hypertensive status; BP < 140/< 90 defines control. Hypercholesterolemia is defined by ATP III criteria, i.e., treatment and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) =100 mg/dL and non-high(H)DL-C =130 in patients with Framingham 10-yr CHD risk >20%, =130 and =160, respectively, for 10-yr CHD risk 10-20%, and =160 and =190 for 10-yr risk < 10%; LDL-C and non-HDL-C below diagnostic thresholds define control. CHD prevention goals, prevalence, treatment and control of hypercholesterolemia in hypertensive patients, time trends, and variables associated with control will be investigated. We will account for the complex sampling structure of NHANES when estimating parameters and variances and for subpopulations of interest, such as hypertensive adults with hyperlipidemia, domain analysis will be used.
