Title: Spherical Distance Matrices and the Horseshoe Effect

Abstract:

One important use of multidimensional scaling is seriation, the ordering of a set of objects on the basis of dissimilarities between them. In many applications, it is difficult to distinguish degrees of large dissimilarity, resulting in a phenomenon that D.G. Kendall dubbed "the horseshoe effect." Kendall (1971) offered an intuitive explanation of the horseshoe effect; I will attempt a more technical explanation that appeals to the theory of spherical distance matrices.
