Victor Donnay, Committee Chair

Victor Donnay is Professor of Mathematics at Bryn Mawr College whose Mathematics Department received the 2012 AMS Award for Exemplary Achievement. In addition to his research on chaotic dynamical systems, Victor has worked extensively on issues of K-16 education in projects funded by the NSF's Math Science Partnership and Noyce programs. Most recently, he directed a summer institute for secondary teachers on Math and Sustainability. In his own teaching, Victor links math to issues of civic engagement. His students carry out service-learning projects in which they use their math to support positive change for sustainability and his differential equations course was chosen as a SENCER model course.

Thomas J. Pfaff, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Ithaca College.

Pfaff's main teaching interest is incorporating sustainability and quantitative literacy issues into mathematics courses. Pfaff is the lead-PI of the Multidisciplinary Sustainability Education Project, and he has given several presentations and written several papers on sustainability in the mathematics curriculum. He also maintains a page of sustainability curriculum materials for mathematics, and is developing a new page. Tom often bikes to work, has a large garden, and chickens.

Catherine A. Roberts, Chair, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Holy Cross College

Roberts is Editor in Chief of the interdisciplinary journal Natural Resource Modeling, the official journal of the Resource Modeling Association. She previously directed Holy Cross's Environmental Studies program. In addition to assisting with Math Awareness Month, she is also helping Mathematics for Planet Earth (MPE2013+) organize its workshop on Natural Resource Management. Catherine was the lead scientist on a project to model white-water rafting traffic patterns for the Grand Canyon National Park. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two sons.

Mary Lou Zeeman, Professor of Mathematics, Bowdoin College

Mary Lou Zeeman is the Wells Johnson Professor of Mathematics at Bowdoin College. Her research interests range from dynamical systems to population dynamics, neuroendocrinology, sustainability and climate science. Mary Lou is involved in several interdisciplinary initiatives focused on the health of the planet. She co-directs the Mathematics and Climate Research Network, she helped found the Institute for Computational Sustainability based at Cornell University, and she is on the organizational team of the worldwide Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 initiative.
