Sample Press ReleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEFor more information, contact: [name, title] [Organization] Announces Activities for Math Awareness Month"Mathematics and Sports" is Theme for Mathematics Awareness Month April 2010 CITY, STATE, DATE, 2010 -- [School/organization] will be participating in the annual observance of Math Awareness Month through [a number of activities - give general statement of participation, to be elaborated on below]. MAM is sponsored by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM), which has selected "Mathematics and Sports" as the theme for MAM 2010. The American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics announce that the theme for Mathematics Awareness Month, April 2010, is Mathematics and Sports. Sports offers a cornucopia of instances involving data, strategies and chance, each of which is perfectly suited to mathematical analysis. Beyond the obvious uses of mathematics for things such as rating baseball players and football quarterbacks, mathematics is used to design the dimple patterns on golf balls and the composition of racing tires; it is used for scheduling tournaments and for ranking teams; and it is used to determine tactics and to predict the ultimate limits in sports records. In the 1960s the ABC television network began a popular weekly series called "The Wide World of Sports" that spanned the globe to show the tremendous variety of sports. For 2010, the Joint Policy Board of Mathematics has chosen the theme "Mathematics and Sports" to highlight the intersection of the sports world with the wide world of mathematics—a universal language that is used to investigate problems ranging from the athletic to the cosmic. The 2010 Mathematics Awareness web site has articles on baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, track and field, tennis, and car racing as well as videos and links to other resources. Resources for this year's Mathematics Awareness Month are designed to help explain the theme. At www.mathaware.org, you can download articles and essays, as well as an 8.5 x 11" copies of any of the four 2010 posters. To order the four 2010 Mathematics Awareness Month Posters, call the MAA Customer Service Center at (800) 331-1622, fax your request to (301) 206-9789, or send an email to maaservice@maa.org, with the subject "MAM 2010 Poster Order." Please include your name, shipping address, and credit card number (Visa or MasterCard) and expiration date. All orders for the poster must be prepaid. There is a $10.00 charge for shipping and handling for the first set of posters; add $2.00 for each additional set of posters. Mail orders may be sent to: MAA About Math Awareness Month and JPBMMathematics Awareness Month, held each year in April, was created to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. It began in 1986, when President Reagan issued a proclamation establishing National Mathematics Awareness Week. Activities for Mathematics Awareness Month generally are organized on local, state and regional levels by college and university departments, institutional public information offices, student groups, and related associations and interest groups. The JPBM is a collaborative effort of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). |

Mathematics Awareness Month is sponsored each year by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics to recognize the importance of mathematics through written materials and an accompanying poster that highlight mathematical developments and applications in a particular area.
