This 5-day workshop introduces foundational concepts, theory and methods for causal inference from observational data, and imperfect randomized experiments. Participants will acquire the requisite set of skills to become sophisticated and critical consumers of emerging modern causal inference methodology. Topics covered include the g-formula, inverse probability weighting of marginal structural models, causal mediation analysis, trial emulation and methods to handle unmeasured confounding via instrumental variables, difference-in-differences techniques and proxy-based methods. The workshop will include several areas of applications in the population health sciences with special emphasis given to policy evaluation and comparison effectiveness in pharmacoepidemiology.

Vanderbilt Biostatistics Summer Internships for Underrepresented Undergraduates

The Department of Biostatistics is excited to offer our Vanderbilt Biostatistics Summer Internships for Underrepresented Undergraduates. The 2025 program will take place from May 5 through June 13. Applications are due by February 3, 2025. The goal is to expose underrepresented groups of undergraduate students to biomedical and/or public health research with quantitative methods, and ultimately to increase underrepresented students' interest in pursuing graduate degrees in biostatistics or data science. Interns will be directly mentored by experienced researchers as they gain valuable experience in the biostatistics field. They will work on a research project, complete weekly assignments, and deliver a formal oral presentation at the end of the summer program. There will also be opportunities for discussion and training on topics such as writing personal statements and résumés. The program specifically focuses on students of diverse backgrounds, and in particular students from underrepresented groups, including socioeconomically underserved and first-generation college students. Each intern is paid a stipend of up to $4,500. Housing is not included.

Registration is now open for the 10th Workshop on Biostatistics and Bioinformatics in Atlanta, USA on May 9-11, 2025. The keynote speaker is Dr. Heping Zhang, Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Biostatistics, Professor in the Child Study Center and Professor of Statistics and Data Science at Yale University. There will be invited talks by distinguished researchers, and a poster session by young researchers and graduate students. In order to disseminate the biostatistics knowledge in support of the workshop, we provide a short course during the workshop. The short course will be offered as a part of the workshop program and held on the afternoon of Friday, May 09, 2025. The short course is a half-day (four hours) presentation. The course certificate is provided.

The workshop will be providing partial travel awards to selected conference participants. Priority will be given to senior graduate students, post-graduate, recent PhDs, junior faculty, and under-represented groups. Check the application of travel award for young and minority researchers.
