The Creation of a Data Art Collection to Raise Awareness of Racial Disparities in Obstetrics and Gynecology Health Care (309907)

*Katharine Fischer Berry Correia, Amherst College

Keywords: data art, racial disparities, obstetrics&gynecology, gganimate, ggpattern, ggforce

There is a substantial number of articles in the obstetrics & gynecology literature documenting racial disparities in access-to-care, treatment provided, and health outcomes in the field. In this talk, I will introduce data art as a medium for raising awareness around an issue and providing sustained accountability for addressing the issue. I will then discuss the process I undertook to create a data art collection, in collaboration with a small group of creative undergraduate students, to highlight the racial disparities in obstetrics & gynecology. Along the way, I’ll introduce the R tools used in the project, including implementing a reproducible literature search of journal articles and applying fun packages like gganimate, ggpattern, and ggforce to create the data art.
