Building Your Career in Academia: Benefits of Joining a Statistics or Biostatistics Academic Unit (309854)

*Julia N. Soulakova, University of Central Florida

Keywords: career building, path to independence, professional environment

In this presentation I will share the key lessons I have learnt through my career as a faculty member of the Department of Statistics, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then as a Biostatistician at the Office of the Associate Dean for Research, College of Medicine, University of Central Florida. I will discuss differences between tenure-track faculty positions at Biostatistics or Statistics (BioStat) units, e.g., Department of Statistics or Division of Biostatistics, and non-BioStat units, e.g., Department of Internal Medicine. The tenure-track faculty positions will be compared with respect to: criteria for promotion and tenure, balancing independent and collaborative research, engaging in consulting, establishing a cohesive research team, service activities, and communicating effectively with administration. I hope that this presentation will be helpful for preparation of career development plans, identifying potential barriers to success and ways of overcoming these barriers, as well as gaining confidence in future successful career development.
