In recent years, the American Statistical Association has strived to promote diversity and inclusion within the field of statistics. The hiring process is a central means of advancing – or hindering – the inclusion and development of statisticians from underrepresented populations. Equitable hiring practices, particularly the removal of both systemic and unconscious biases and barriers that inhibit equal access to positions, can contribute greatly to an inclusive environment within statistics. While many statisticians are eager to improve hiring practices in their own workplaces, they may lack the knowledge and practical skills needed to actually adopt a more equitable process. In this session, a panel of expert statisticians from academia, industry, and government will provide an overview of how to identify hiring practices that undermine equity and implement more equitable hiring practices. Attendees will learn about both adverse and equitable hiring practices as well as methods to advocate for equitable hiring practices within their own organizations. Panelists: Emily Butler, GSK Felicity Enders, Mayo Clinic Portia Exum, SAS Leslie McClure, Drexel University
