Keywords: Postdoc, postdoctoral fellow, early-stage researcher

The term ‘postdoc`, or postdoctoral fellow, describes someone who has acquired a PhD and is working short-term in a mentored research role. A postdoctoral fellowship is a standard career stepping stone in many scientific fields, yet for statistics, postdoctoral fellowships are just starting to become more of the norm. Over the last 25 years, the number of postdocs in statistics has been growing exponentially (1). While the specific roles of postdocs can vary, there are numerous career benefits for early-stage researchers stepping into a postdoctoral position as well as for faculty seeking to hire postdocs for their labs. This session will focus on a discussion of these benefits, the differing roles of postdoctoral fellows, and how postdoctoral fellows can impact the field of Statistics.
