The Implementation of New Privacy Regulation That Will Have Huge Implications for Survey Research (308416)

Keywords: research, surveys, CCPA, GDPR

The implementation of new privacy regulations (i.e. CCPA, GDPR) will require new consent language that will have huge implications for survey research. We tested the impact of consent language on survey respondent behavior using a randomized control trial framework, and found that survey sponsor, consent language used, and the placement of the consent language in the questionnaire all can influence and change respondent behavior and key survey estimates. We found that placing consent language at the beginning of the survey and using longer, more detailed consent wording increased completion rates and created less biased estimates. We'll review our experiment and discuss considerations for future surveys.
