Factors Affecting Women's Success in STEM: A Narrative Study (306751)

*Analyn Alquitran, University of Denver

Keywords: Women in STEM

The lack of diversity in STEM is widespread and recruiting and sustaining women in the field is a high priority. In the age of automation and artificial intelligence, diversity in the STEM fields and participation of women in the area is highly desirable and considered a necessity to sustain innovation and to avoid bias. This narrative study employed a two-step interview process and a purposeful sampling of a female individual working as a STEM professional to identify factors affecting the successful navigation of a female professional in a male-dominated STEM field. The central question of this study revolves around identifying the positive experiences and challenges influencing the decision of a female professional to pursue a career in STEM. This study identified several factors affecting women’s success in STEM, such as culture, support system, mentor, and motivation.
