Communication in the Digital Age: Successes and Challenges of Online Communication (306540)

*Abigail Shoben, The Ohio State University

Keywords: communication, telecommuting, web conferencing, online education

Technology improvements have led to dramatic changes in how statisticians communicate with each other, with collaborators, and with students. This shift in communication mode has benefits and challenges, particularly for women and other groups for whom communicating face-to-face has known challenges. Panelists will share experiences with nontraditional communication in a variety of areas (teaching, industry, academic research) and provide suggestions to audience members for future successful non face-to-face communication.

Rebecca Andridge (Ohio State University) will share her experience developing online classes (undergraduate and graduate).

Siobhan Brown (University of Washington Clinical Trials Center) will share her experience telecommuting full-time while working for a clinical trials coordinating center.

Danielle Sullivan (AbbVie) will share her experience working remotely 1-2 days per week and her organization’s transition to conducting meetings via web conference.

Amy S. Ruppert (Ohio State) will share her experience working with the multi-institutional Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and contrast it with working with investigators at her institution.
