Data-Rich Journalism: Demographic Trends in Wisconsin's Schools (306420)

*Sarah Kemp, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Applied Population Laboratory

Keywords: schools, journalism

For many years the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Applied Population Laboratory has researched several school trends including enrollment decline, school funding, district referendums, and student poverty. This poster will show how our demographic research has been recently taken to the people by partnering with a respected state-level news outlet to produce articles focused on school demography and social science data. These demographic trends are communicated to the general public through maps, graphs, and other data visualizations, accompanied by text and a series of radio interviews. This poster will demonstrate the process of communicating these topics, the data sources that are utilized, and how translational science is conveyed through this innovative format.
