Choosing a right career path is critical for junior researchers who are looking for their first real job after graduate school. The biggest question is whether to pursue a career in academia, industry, or government. This question is no less important for higher-level researchers, who are considering where to transition to a new career in different sectors.

This session will feature the three prominent speakers in academia, industry and government:

Wendy Martinez, PhD (President-Elect, American Statistical Association Director of the Mathematical Statistics Research Center, US Bureau of Labor Statistics);

Sally C. Morton, PhD (Dean of the College of Science Professor, Department of Statistics Virginia Tech);

Christine K Gause, PhD (Executive Director, Merck Research Labs.).

The speakers will share some key factors and skills that are most important when recruiting and hiring employees. They will also share their insights and work experiences that helped them to build a successful career in their fields.

Their presentations and the following discussions with the audience will provide valuable information on the pros and cons, and particular aspects of each sectors.

Chair: Eunhee Kim, PhD Principal Scientist Biostatistician, Late Development Statistics - Oncology Merck Research Labs, Merck & Co., Inc.
