Contemporary Issues in Big Data and Privacy

What Role Can Statisticians and Data Scientists Play in Protecting Privacy? (304872)

*Kirsten J Lum, Johnson & Johnson

Keywords: Data transparency, de-identification, Privacy Engineering, privacy risk

You may have heard of the term “privacy engineering” and wondered what it is or what it has to do with statistics and data science. Or perhaps you noticed an increase in research and tools for reproducibility and transparency. While reproducibility and transparency may have many benefits, they may also come with risks to personal privacy. As statisticians and data scientists, we can help mitigate these risks and maximize data utility by researching and developing methods and tools for assessing privacy risk and de-identifying data and documents. In doing so, we can play a part in gaining trust, opening barriers to data access, and enabling transparency. I will talk about these points from the experiences I’ve gained working at a pharmaceutical company.
