Feel Like a Statistician: How to Create a Gut Reaction to Key Statistical Concepts and Why You Should Want To (304819)

*Elizabeth Schiferl, The Lubrizol Corp.

Keywords: Consulting, teaching, building relationships

This talk is aimed at statisticians working with researchers in an industrial/technical setting. After 30 years of working with very smart and technical but statistically unaware individuals and teams, I have discovered that there are a few key concepts which, if conveyed well, dramatically improve our ability to learn in the presence of variation. These concepts are fundamental to the statistical way of approaching problems, but are not at all obvious to my customers - at least in a way they can relate to. This talk will cover the techniques I have found to explain concepts such as repeatability, regression, multicollinearity, why DOE works, etc. so that my customers can FEEL the impact of variation and how and why statistics can help us find a way though the noise.
